Bookkeeper for Contractors

Your contractor books, handled.

Most contractors set up a limited company to keep things clean — then find the bookkeeping is anything but. Invoices, expenses, payroll, VAT, dividend records: each one manageable on its own, together a drain on the hours you actually bill. Fixed monthly fee, ICAEW chartered, same-day replies.

  • Books clean and current every month — no year-end scramble
  • Know your tax position well before HMRC sends the reminder
  • Dividend and salary structure reviewed so you keep more of what you earn
  • VAT and HMRC correspondence handled — less of that landing on your desk

No long-term contract. If it is not working after three months, you leave with clean books and nothing owed.

Sound familiar?

Still doing your own books between contracts?

When you are billing by the day, the hours spent on bookkeeping, chasing receipts and working out what to pay yourself cost more than most people admit. Add quarterly VAT, annual accounts and a corporation tax return, and the admin side of running a limited company can take a disproportionate amount of your time. None of it is especially complicated — but it does all need doing properly, and the longer it drifts, the more it costs to put right.

  • Hours lost on bookkeeping that should be going on billable work
  • No clear view on tax position until the accountant calls with a figure
  • Dividend and salary decisions made without knowing the actual numbers

What sorted looks like

Monthly bookkeeping kept current so the records are never a problem. Your tax position visible throughout the year, not presented as a surprise at the end of it. Salary and dividend drawn from a position of knowing what is sensible — not guessing.

  • Books reconciled monthly — no scramble when the year-end arrives
  • Tax position visible well before HMRC asks for payment
  • Dividend and salary structure reviewed with your actual numbers in front of you
  • A fixed monthly cost that does not move regardless of how many questions you ask

Why Swift

Why contractors choose Swift over others

There is no shortage of accountants willing to take on a limited company. Here is what is different about working with one who already understands how contractor businesses are structured.

🧾

Contractor structures understood from day one

Director payroll, dividend timing, expenses through the company, IR35 awareness — you will not need to spend the first call explaining how your business works. We work with limited company contractors regularly. Ask a question about what you can put through the company, and you will have a clear answer the same day.

💬

Replies the same day you ask

Questions get answered the day you ask them. Not logged, not passed to a junior and not picked up whenever someone has a moment. If you want to know whether a piece of equipment or a software subscription is deductible before you buy it, you will know before the end of the day.

🔒

One price, agreed upfront

Your monthly fee is fixed and does not move. No hourly billing, no invoice that arrives larger than expected, no charge for picking up the phone. Your accounting costs are as predictable as any other fixed overhead in the business.

Getting started

Up and running in four steps

Four steps from enquiry to everything being handled. No complicated onboarding, no forms that need a lawyer to interpret.

1

Send your enquiry

Fill in the form on this page. Kieran reads every enquiry personally and responds the same day with a clear next step. No automated holding messages, no waiting to be allocated.

2

A short discovery call

Around twenty minutes to understand your setup, your current software and what needs sorting. By the end of the call you will know exactly what is covered, what it costs and when it starts. No vague proposals sent a week later.

3

We handle the setup

Your Xero account is configured, your records are brought up to date and your payroll and VAT are registered correctly. The setup is handled on our side. You confirm you want to proceed — that is largely it.

4

Ongoing — nothing falls through

Monthly bookkeeping, quarterly VAT returns, annual accounts and corporation tax — handled as a matter of course. Your tax position is visible well before it becomes urgent. Surprises are largely avoidable when the books are current.

Questions

Questions contractors usually ask first

Yes — it is one of the more common setups we work with. Director payroll at an efficient level, dividends drawn from retained profits, expenses properly categorised through the company. You will not need to explain the basics before getting a useful answer. If your situation involves IR35 considerations, that is something we can discuss early.
Once your books are current and your payroll and dividends are on record, your corporation tax liability becomes visible throughout the year rather than only at the year-end. Most clients have a clear picture three to four months before payment is due — enough time to plan, not just react.
It is the most common starting point. Catching up takes a little more work at the beginning and may cost slightly more than ongoing monthly fees — we will tell you exactly what that looks like before anything starts. Once current, keeping it current is straightforward.
No. Month-to-month, cancel with a month’s notice. We would rather keep clients because the service is worth it than because leaving is inconvenient. That said, most people stay — which is a reasonable proxy for how the service tends to work out.
